PONTEFRACT INFIRMARY AND BEYOND
At the age of 18, Freda was accepted for training at Pontefract Infirmary. This training finished about 1940 when she went to undertake midwifery training at St Luke's in Bradford.
The photograph above left shows Freda during her training period at Pontefract aged about 18. The photograph above right is Freda in 1940 at the end of her training when she would have been aged 22. In November 1937, Freda received notification that she had passed the Preliminary State Examination of the General Nursing Council for England and Wales. A copy of the certificate she received is reproduced below.

Freda wanted to help with the war effort and so sent off a letter to the Nursing Times to find out more about what was involved. Her letter was published in the journal and recommended that she made a number of contacts as can be seen by the reproduction of the article below.
