DIARY JULY/AUGUST 1945
July 1st
Day off. Packed nearly all of my goods. Told at 1pm our posting was cancelled. Unpacked a few things, but hope to go on leave very soon.
July 3rd
Went to dressmakers and was measured for a blouse. Had a visit to the chiropodist and had my feet trimmed.
July 4th
Walked to the top of the hill and thro the woods with Win.
July 5th
Had a party in our mess some of the 'Y' officers. Discussion on getting the sisters married. Very hilarious evening.
July 6th
Went for walk with Padre Kyne round the wood. A lovely view of surrounding villages
July 7th
Barbara left the unit. Win, Kay I and the dental officer went for a ride in the sisters car. Went to Hanover and Hamelin. Bridges are bombed at Hamelin. Got lost arrived back at 9pm. News of leave at 11pm
July 8th
Service in am and pm. Only 1 patient and myself in the pm service heard news of leave, Win and I go by air on Thursday.
July 9th
Went to the dressmakers in the pm she was out.
July 10th
Went for a fitting into Gandersheim this morning. Blouse not ready
July 11th
Collected blouse from dressmakers, packed for leave. Left in car at 4 for Bad Geghausen, our tickets for leave on to A.T.S. holding unit for the night
July 12th
Left by transport truck to airport. Left Germany 12.00 arrived Northolt 3.30pm. Onto Gower Street. Caught train from Kings X arrived home 10.30pm Mum, Teresa and Thomas met me.
July 22nd
Leave ended. Thomas, mum Eva and kiddies took me to Doncaster. Arrived Kings X at 7pm. Met with Win and Andy at A.T.S. holding unit
July 23rd
Up at 5.30 left unit at 6.30am plane left 8.15am. Altered watches 1hour. By transport to 23rd Scottish Gen Hosp. Stayed there the night.
July 24th
23rd Scottish provided transport to 29th Gen, with a sister. Had lunch then onto Gandersheim arrived 4pm
July 26th
On night duty All the sisters are going on leave.
August 11th
Finished a fortnight's night duty. Win and I are posted to 25th Gen Hosp
Aug 12th
Went for a car ride thro the Hartz mountains with Padre Duncan and Paddy Cremin. Dinner at night for us. Speeches by the Colonel, Win me and the padre chatting and various items afterwards.
Aug 13th
Left Gandersheim 9am . A crowd waved us off. Stopped twice on the way for feeds. Arrived Munster 4pm unpacked and met the sisters. Feel very homesick for the 20th C.C.S.
Aug 14th
Reported to matron at 10.15am. I have a woman's ward to equip and open with 2 German girls
Aug 15th
Heard this morning the war ended at midnight yesterday. Quiet day no excitement heard the King's speech in the evening
Aug 31st
Leslie collected Win and I to go on a picnic. Wet day. Stayed in to tea. After tea left in jeep to go to Leslie's mess for dinner. Accident at 6pm. Win cut her face and knees. Leslie compound fracture of tibia and fibia. Me fractured femur and fractured wrist. Seen by Germans. Collected in lorry by soldiers. Transferred to ambulance and onto Munster. Put in P.O.P. (plaster) that evening
